Illegal Immigrants In The USA
As you may know, politics and international economics are a couple of my hobbies; especially south Asian and middle eastern. So, I received an e-mail today from a friend regarding the problem the US has with illegal immigrants from Mexico. It’s one of those e-mails that you are supposed to pass on to your contacts so everyone can become more educated. Anyway, I decided to post it on here along with my response. I highly urge you to read them both. Enjoy, and feel free to comment!
Original E-Mail Sent To Me:
Makes sense to me…..
This is astounding and infuriating. Why isn’t this in the papers? Please read and pass it on.
WHY ARE WEÂ BANKRUPT?
Informative, and mind boggling!
You think the war in Iraq is costing us too much? Read this:
Boy, was I confused. I have been hammered with the propaganda that it is the Iraq war and the war on terror that is bankrupting us. I now find that to be RIDICULOUS.
I hope the following 14 reasons are forwarded over and over again until they are read so many times that the reader gets sick of reading them. I also have included the URL’s for verification of all the following facts.
1. $11 Billion to $22 billion is spent on welfare to illegal aliens each year by state governments.    Verify at: http://tinyurl.com/zob77

11. During the year of 2005 there were 4 to 10 MILLION illegal aliens that crossed our Southern Border also, as many as 19,500 illegal aliens from Terrorist Countries. The total cost is a whopping $ 338.3 BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR AND IF YOU’RE LIKE ME HAVING TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY; IT IS $338,300,000,000.00 WHICH WOULD BE ENOUGH TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY .
Are we THAT stupid? YES, FOR LETTING THOSE IN THE U.S. CONGRESS GET AWAY WITH LETTING THIS HAPPEN YEAR AFTER YEAR!!!!!
We’re letting this happen when we say Social Security is going broke and seniors are paying higher prices than ever for their Medicare supplements.
If this doesn’t bother you then just delete the message. If, on the other hand, it does raise the hair on the back of your neck, I hope you forward it to every legal resident in the country including every elected representative in Washington , D.C. – five times a week for as long as it takes to restore some resemblance of intelligence in our policies and enforcement thereof.
My Response:
Feel free to forward this on to all of your friends. It should help them understand the situation a little better than the original e-mail.
Wow! 338.3 billion is a lot of money. However, it is only 1/9 of the cost of the war, and the suffrage from everything involved with illegal aliens is nothing compared to that which is caused by the war. And the US is not bankrupt. If we were, we’d be in a lot better shape. The US is the POOREST country in the world! Try that one on for size!
Remember when we were growing up? There was no talk of illegal immigrants. We didn’t have problems with Mexicans taking American jobs. The whole hype about illegal immigrants started in the mid-1990s. I think it is terrible that we have all these Mexicans coming into the US; it’s helping destroy our economy. The solution to the problem is not to put a wall up around our border, or whatever other great ideas Americans have. That’s the typical response of American philosophy. It’s like taking medicine for an illness that suppresses it instead of fixing it. In order to solve our problem we need to find the cause of it and fix it there.
Since the problem started in the mid-1990s, when we were teenagers, we should remember what event took place that caused the problem…  …NAFTA. This is why Mexicans poor over our borders and drag our country down. George Bush Sr. is responsible for NAFTA, but he wasn’t able to get it passed before Clinton took over. Clinton made a couple of changes (these changes are the cause of all the illegal immigrants).
This is what happened: Clinton added some clauses that would protect American workers. In 20th century Mexico, being a corn farmer is the thing to do. Everyone in Mexico eats corn, so everyone grows it. Then NAFTA was implemented. All of the sudden US companies started opening factories just south of the border. A lot of people in northern Mexico got jobs in these factories. They made better money than working in the fields, and Americans got to buy Mexican-made products for less money! This was great!
What about the Americans that lost their jobs though? It’s okay, because one of those clauses that Clinton added set aside money that paid for better education and training for the Americans that lost their jobs. So when sock factories moved to Mexico, the American sock workers were trained how to make electronics. They went from being paid $5 and hour making socks to being paid $12 and hour making computer chips.
But what about the corn? Well, there was less corn being produced in Mexico, but that was fine with the Mexicans because they still had enough to feed themselves. They just didn’t export as much of it to other countries.
But what about the corn in the US? Oh, that corn. The corn discussed in one of the clauses that Clinton added; the corn produced in the US. Yes, Clinton feared that after signing NAFTA, Mexico would start exporting corn to the US and drive the American corn farmers out of business. So, he provided billions of dollars of subsidies to the US corn farmers.
Billions of dollars for growing corn? Dang! I’m in! So every farmer and their mother started growing corn in the US. Even if they didn’t sell it, the US government would pay them for it. So now the US has all this corn and nothing to do with it. Oh what, we just got this North American Free Trade Agreement; let’s just export it to Mexico for super cheap since the US government is already paying us for it.
And here is where the problem of illegal immigrants starts. Mexico starts buying all of its corn from the US. Mexican corm farmers (primarily in central and southern Mexico, because northern Mexicans now work in factories) can’t compete with the US prices (due to the subsidies) so they all go out of business. They starve; their children starve, so they head north to get a job in a factory. Sorry Juan, there aren’t enough factory jobs. With his family dying of starvation in southern Mexico, Juan has no choice but to swim the Rio and try to make money in the US. A few weeks later Juan is sending every penny he makes in the US back to his family in Mexico so they can afford to live. Ten years later the US can’t figure out how to solve the $338.3 billion problem caused by illegal immigrants.
And there you have it. If you want the Mexicans to stay in Mexico, stop subsidizing US agriculture.
